Holly Brook Baptist Church, 3219 S. Farm-to-Market Road 2869 in Hawkins, will celebrate its 30th anniversary on Aug. 27, with a potluck luncheon for members, former members and friends following the morning worship service. Dr. David Hardage, executive director of the Baptist General Convention of Texas, is the scheduled speaker for the 11 a.m. service.
The Salvation Army is in need of donations for its food pantry and shelter kitchen. Donations can be dropped off at 633 N. Broadway Ave. Urgent food pantry needs include: tomato sauce, ramen noodles, canned tuna or chicken, corn, refried beans, peanut butter, Spaghetti-Os, canned pears or peaches, chicken noodle soup, elbow macaroni, cereal, macaroni and cheese, bag of pinto beans, bag of rice, cornmeal and crackers. Local Christian radio stations 89.5 KVNE and 91.3 KGLY, the St. Paul Children’s Foundation and local businesses have partnered for the Back-to-School Shoe Drive. New shoes in children’s size 4 through adult sizes are needed with a special emphasis on athletic (tennis) shoes for children and teens. The goal is to collect more than 500 pairs of shoes, including online donations. The shoes will be distributed to children in East Texas in time for the start of the 2017-18 school year. PRAYER AND PRAISE
A prayer and praise service in honor and memory of the Van Zandt County residents affected by the April 29 tornado is scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday at Crossroads Church, 1930 S. Trade Days Blvd. in Canton. The Van Zandt County Long-Term Recovery Group’s Spiritual and Emotional Care Initiative is putting on the event. Ministers will offer prayers. Personal prayer and counseling will be available. Help with information and resources also will be provided. All of the offering will go to Van Zandt County victims.
Catholic Charities, The Salvation Army and the Long Term Recovery Group can assist with needs from the recent East Texas tornadoes. BRANSON AT HOLLY BROOK
Holly Brook Baptist Church, 3219 S. Farm-to-Market Road 2869 in Hawkins, will present “Branson at Holly Brook II” at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 18 in the Family Life Center. The public is invited. There is no admission charge, but an offering will be taken to benefit the Holly Brook Celebration Singers music fund. Dinner will be served. The Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary will have an Overstock Sale for the public at its Marketplace furniture building and Old Spence garage sale building from 8 a.m. to noon Aug. 19. The buildings are located on the southeast and northeast corners of Spring Street and Bow Street in downtown Tyler. All proceeds will benefit the Tyler Salvation Army.

Sight.org will have Sight Night, “The Joy of Sight,” from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 3 at Callynth Photography Studio in Tyler. Tickets go for a $5 minimum donation. The event will include local art, live music and food. All proceeds will benefit the work of Sight.org to restore sight to the blind in Togo, Africa.
