Romen Tucker puts fun in his annual basketball fundamentals camp for kids at the Glass Recreation Center.
Tucker's weeklong, low cost camp for boys and girls ages 6 to 18 teaches basketball shooting form, proper passing, ball handling and making new friends through drills and games.
Tucker is a graduate of Chapel Hill High School and has played and coached for the East Texas Ballers League, another local youth basketball program, since he was 14.
He is founder of Rose City Warriors and Rose City Lady Warriors, two select teams under the Amateur Athletic Union of the United States. He said he leads the camp as a way to give back to the community where he grew up.
"A lot of the time, these kids don't get to leave the area," Tucker said in a previous interview. "They don't have a lot of things they can do in summer, except for come to the Glass and play ball, so I took it upon myself and said, 'hey let's get together a group of kids here. Let's help develop them, and let's help build them and give them more than what they just have in one summer, something that they can have for a lifetime.'"
He also gives private basketball lessons and works as an assistant basketball coach at Texas College.
