The East Texas Food Bank beat The Salvation Army in a jalapeño eating contest at Whataburger, 6849 S. Broadway Ave., in Tyler on Thursday.

A four-person team from each organization raced to eat as many of the spicy peppers as possible in one minute.

The East Texas Food Bank took home the winning $2,500 for the organization as well as free Whataburger for a year after its team downed more than 40 jalapeños. The Salvation Army received $1,000 for the organization and free Whataburger for half a year after its team ate 35 jalapeños.

The East Texas Food Bank provides more than 21 million meals each year to 200 partner agencies in 26 East Texas counties.

Nearly 30 million Americans receive assistance from The Salvation Army each year through a broad array of social services that include providing food for the hungry, relief for disaster victims, assistance for the disabled, outreach to the elderly and ill, clothing and shelter to the homeless and opportunities for underprivileged children.
